Image tile layers are data layers that can access and display raster tile data provided by an image tile service. Stored as tiles, or levels, of png or jpeg images that represent geographic data, image tile layers are typically used in basemaps to provide geographic or topographic context. Image tile layers can be composed of static operational layers; they are highly compressed and they are easily understood by most common mapping application software. Image tile layers are compatible not only with ArcGIS client APIs but also third-party apps using OGC protocols such as WMS/WMTS. Image tile layers work with many types of browsers and devices, provide high-end cartographic capabilities, and support various data sources, such as imagery and elevation data.
