An item, also known as a content item, is a resource stored in a portal such as web maps, layers, styles, script tools, files, and notebooks. An item is used to manage the properties (metadata) and settings of a resource, and they are accessible both through an item page and ArcGIS APIs. Properties such as name, owner, title, description, created (date), tags, and sharing settings can be set through the item page. To access an item, you can reference it by its URL or unique item ID.
An item is created when:
- A file is added to a portal.
- A URL to a resource is referenced.
- A result is produced from the completion of an analysis tool.
- Using the Map Viewer and interactive tools.
Sharing
Configuring the sharing level of an item will ensure the security of the item and its underlying data. The following is a list of the sharing levels available for the different types of ArcGIS products:
- Owner (private): Only the owner has access. The item and data service are private and will not be visible or accessible to others. A valid access token or scoped API key is required.
- Owner (private): Only the owner has access. The item and data service are private and will not be visible to others who have access to the portal. A valid access token is required.
- Organization: All members of your organization can access the item and data service. A valid access token is required.
- Group: All members of a group can access the item and data service. A valid access token is required.
- Everyone (public): Anyone can view the item and access the data service.

- Organization: All members of your organization can access the item and data service. A valid access token is required.

Supported types
A portal supports many different types of content as items. Here are some common supported file types:
- Shapefiles (.shp)
- GeoJSON (.geojson)
- CSV (comma-separated values)
- KML (Keyhole Markup Language)
- Raster images (.jpeg, .png, etc.)

You can discover items using the search capabilities in a portal. You can use the:
- Integrated search option in Map Viewer to find items that include web maps, layers, and more.
- Content page in a portal to search using keywords and filter the returned results.
- Portal service to programmatically search and filter items based on your needs.
