A map tile service, formerly known as an image tile service, is a data service that provides access to static, pre-rendered tiles. Map tile services are supported and created with map services. Mapping applications typically use client APIs and map tile services to access map tiles through a map tile layer and display them in a map. Map tile services are typically used by basemaps, but can also be used to find elevation. Map tile services are created and managed using data management tools and are typically accessed by their item ID or URL. A map tile service can also package map tiles for use offline as map tile packages.
