An offline map is a map area and its data content downloaded from an offline-enabled web map for use in offline applications. Offline maps are used by partially offline apps built with ArcGIS Maps SDKs for Native Apps as these apps require a network connection to perform the initial download. Once downloaded into the device, the map can be used without a network connection, for example, when working in the field. When a network connection is re-established, edits that were made in the offline map can be synchronized with the source web map. Offline maps can be downloaded into the device using these two development patterns:
- Defining map areas ahead-of-time: The web map author defines areas within the web map to be packaged as offline maps. These areas are called offline map areas. Then, the offline app will download one of the offline map areas that the web map author has defined.
- Defining map areas on-demand: The offline app will define an area of the web map to take offline. Then, ArcGIS Maps SDKs for Native Apps will generate an offline map from the specified area and download it. The web map author has no involvement in this process.
